What's in a name? Well changing names in SharePoint can be confusing.

If you are going to change the name of a page in SharePoint you need to know if you are in WSS or MOSS. MOSS is the fully licensed portal product. I guess you will learn pretty quickly if you are on one of the other if you try to change the name. You can change the name in WSS perfectly fine, only the name change will now show up in the top or side navigation.

You need to go in to site settings and Edit the Top Link Bar, clicking the link you wish to rename and typing the new name WHILE NOT TOUCHING THE URL, which you can't change anyways.

On the other hand if you use MOSS you change the name of any sub-site in the portal like this

And the name changes automatically on all the links. In this case Document Center is chnged to Bob Document Center by just changing the name of the document.

In either case you don't need to worry about changing the name and changing and the URL, but if you just have WSS change names is a bit more work.
